Life as a Cat Mom: And The Adventure with Penny

At the beginning of this year, I made a big that I was going to become a cat mom. Which I do not regret in the least. My friend was giving away kittens for free, and since I was living alone at the time, I figured, “Why not? A little furry partner in crime sounds perfect.”

The Conversion Of Being A Pet Mom

Now, I’ve always been a dog person. It was hard not to be when you grew up with them and how cute they were. But living in an apartment and working long hours as a News Reporter it didn’t seem the smartest to have a dog. I dove headfirst into cat mom life with no idea what I was getting into.

Penny's Personality Starts To Shine

It didn’t take long for me to learn Penny’s quirks. She quickly showed me her favorite spots, her food preferences, and that she loves being outside. I even used to walk her on a leash because she loved being outside that much! However, when I got her right after New Year’s — it was cold, snow on the ground, and I was living on the third floor. I’d let her hang out on the outdoor balcony, and she’d just lay there, watching snowflakes and sunbeams like she was taking it all in for the first time.

New Apartment, New Adventure

Fast forward to now — new apartment, second floor, different view, same curious cat. Except this time, Penny found a little nook on the balcony that gives her access to part of the roof. And you guessed it… she’s made it her personal hangout spot. She’ll climb up there and just camp out for hours, sunbathing and people-watching like she owns the place.

Enter Pepper: The Rooftop Rookie

Then came Pepper — our second youngest cat. And of course, Penny decided to teach her how to get on the roof too. Cute, right? Until Penny decided to take things a little too far and jump off the edge. What does the young one do when the oldest one does something? Follows their footsteps right?! Pepper then tries to jump off the roof but didn’t make it far — she got stuck in the rain gutter. Picture this: me, on my boyfriend’s shoulders, trying to pry a cat out of a gutter while questioning every life decision that led to that moment.

Thankfully, both cats are safe (knock on wood). But it’s definitely a balancing act trying to be the fun mom, letting them enjoy their outdoor adventures while also making sure they don’t turn into tiny daredevils.
