World Champion Gymnast Maggie Nichols Brings Her Powerful Story To Owensboro
It's not often a World Champion visits Owensboro, Kentucky. However, it's happening this week and Maggie Nichols' visit is expected to be as inspirational as the story that brings her here.
WHO IS ATHLETE A?
Maggie Nichols' place in gymnastics history is cemented. She's known for her bravery and accomplishments on the mat, but even more widely known and respected for her bravery and leadership off of it. Maggie was the subject of the Netflix documentary Athlete A, which told the story of the U.S.A. Gymnastics sex abuse scandal and the orchestrated way in which the agency (and others) attempted to cover up the allegations.
NEW BEGINNINGS' MAGGIE NICHOLS EVENT
Maggie Nichols is being brought to town by New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Service on Thursday, October 2nd. The event begins at 7pm and is FREE to the public. Strength & Resilience: Maggie Nichols' Journey to Justice and Healing is part of New Beginnings' efforts to educate the community about sexual abuse and why reporting such crimes and protecting victims is vitally important.
I have the honor of serving as the moderator for this conversation. I have spent the last ten months reviewing the documentary, reading Maggie's autobiography, and combing through details of the complex case against Dr. Larry Nassar. Of course, I am also a huge gymnastics fan and have been following the sport since I was a kid. I speak for many fans of the sport when I say that the U.S.A. Gymnastics scandal made me question this system of training. Sure, Olympic victories are what our sports nation strives for and thrives on. But, at what cost?
