Fundraiser Planned for Evander Lane: Battling Congenital Heart Disease And Rare Anomalies
Baby Evander has been diagnosed with multiple health issues, including a rare condition and heart defects. Follow the Lane family's emotional journey as they prepare for his upcoming surgeries and ongoing care. Here's how you can help.
BABY EVANDER'S MEDICAL JOURNEY
Ryan and Kenzie Lane are living every parent's worst nightmare. Their unborn baby has been diagnosed with a serious birth defect called gastroschisis as well as a clubbed foot. The family was sent directly to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for further scans and analysis. Unfortunately, more bad news was to come.
We found out we were expecting our son in March 2024. The next three months were filled with joy as we shared the news with our older children (10, 12, and 14 years old) and the rest of our family and friends. We had our anatomy scan at the end of June and we were both so excited to see our growing baby boy, Evander finally.
In an instant, our world came crashing down.
We were told at that appointment that our “baby bean” had a hole in his belly, allowing a portion of his bowel/intestine to protrude outside his body (gastroschisis) as well as a clubbed foot. We were referred 3+ hours away to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for a day full of testing. The doctors confirmed Evander had “atypical, complex, gastroschisis” and met with us to discuss other discovered anomalies. Evander’s heart was found to have a hole, known as a VSD (ventricular septal defect) as well as coarctation of the aorta, narrowing of the artery that carries blood from his heart to the rest of his body. Evander was then diagnosed with congenital heart disease. He was determined to have an enlarged brain, kidney, and gallbladder as well. We sat together facing a panel of doctors as they explained our baby boy would not only be undergoing surgery to repair his belly but also open-heart surgery within his first week of life. Additionally, they explained there must be an underlying genetic cause and we should be “prepared for more.” The doctors urged we “relocate” to Cincinnati as quickly as possible. Ideally, both of us would stay in Cincinnati as we await Evander’s arrival, welcome him into the world, and stay with him as he undergoes a tumultuous start to life. Sadly, this is unreasonable for our blended family. Our older children will need to remain in school, our bills will continue to come, our dogs need to be fed and loved, and life goes on.
SEND CARDS OF SUPPORT
You can also send cards of support to the family while they're at Cincinnati Children's Hospital receiving treatment. Restaurant, grocery, or gas gift cards would be a blessing too. Right now they're in fight mode to beat the medical challenges ahead! As you lay your head on the pillow tonight say a prayer for this wonderful family and Baby Evander. They're going through so much. I'm sure it seems like a nightmare they can't wake up from.
You can send cards to:

PRAYERS WELCOMED
We have a delivery date! We will be welcoming our little fighter to the world on September 20th, at the latest! To say we're excited is an understatement. However, we know that once he's here we will have new obstacles to face with his surgeries and such so please continue to keep Baby Bean and our whole family in your prayers! Kenzie Lane - August 29th, 2024
We pray that God heals his little body and that the treatments he receives will be successful.
