When I was in the third grade, I went on a cruise to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As we were waiting for our plane at the little airport to head back to the states, I decided to wander in the gift shop. I was looking at holographic stickers (it was the late 90s) when all of a sudden my dad was like "we gotta go!"

I panicked and ran out to follow him and board the plane. I sat down in my seat and before I knew it, we were in the air. I put my tray table down to lay out my stack of books and things I was carrying, and an "I heart Puerto Rico" sticker fell from my arms. I had forgotten to put it back on the shelf before running out of that gift shop.

As an 8-year-old rule follower always worried about getting in trouble, I didn't know what to do. I thought for sure they were going to have authorities waiting for me when we landed. It was a total accident, but I was so scared that I just tucked it into my book and never told a soul!

Have you ever accidentally stolen something? That feeling of guilt was so strong, I have never done that again. I can't imagine what its like to steal something on PURPOSE.  I follow local law enforcement pages and see that folks do it all the time! Even knowing their security camera footage is going to possibly be posted on the internet. So bold.

CisionOne shared a recent study conducted across the country about dishonesty while shopping. The results found which locations shoplifters frequent the most, and how people feel about it. Do they snitch and turn folks in or just let them commit their crime? Here are the stats for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

How Many Kentuckians Have Accidentally Stolen Something?

"38% of Kentuckians have accidentally stolen an item and didn't do anything about it."  I guess from my confession above, I would fall into this category? However, now that I'm an adult, if I ever realized I took something, of course I'd take it back. I can see how this is easier to do now that self-checkouts are more common. Especially if it is something small.

How Many Kentuckians Have Witnessed Someone Shoplifting?

"44% of people have witnessed someone being dishonest but didn’t say anything." These folks have their Master's degrees in minding their own business. Or maybe they take the state motto, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall." to heart and would never snitch on a fellow Kentuckian?

Which Store Do Kentuckians Steal From the Most?

"Walmart is the store where people are most dishonest." This doesn't surprise me at all. You know the law enforcement pages I follow on Facebook? The majority of security cam photos they post are from Wally world.

Let's end on a good note, though! I did find some statistics from Capital One Shopping that shared, "Retail theft per capita in Kentucky is 18.0% lower than the average among states." So, at least we don't steal as much as other states.
