What My Husband Sees in Nursing Homes Broke My Heart

My husband is a fire suppression inspector. And since every business has to have some level of fire protection, he stays pretty busy. Lately, he's been working a lot in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This week, he told me he's really "over" it.

Some of the places he visits are truly heartbreaking. Just thinking about wasting away in a room with sterile walls, harsh LED lighting, and dreadful daytime TV does sound like hell on earth, doesn’t it?

Celebrating Senior Homes That Get It Right

So, whenever I come across a senior home that focuses on joy and keeping residents engaged, I want to celebrate them. They are doing God's work.

Last year, I saw a video of residents at Carrier Mills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which is owned and operated by WLC Management Firm in Carrier Mills, Illinois. They were playing baseball and, pardon the pun, having an absolute ball. It made me so happy I had to write about the fun they were having up north.

A Las Vegas-Inspired Party in Evansville

This week, while scrolling Facebook, I saw a local photographer share some photos from a Vegas-themed event she attended at North River Health Campus on Baseline Road in Evansville. And let me tell you, these weren’t just decorations and cupcakes.

Residents were transported to a full-on VIP Las Vegas casino experience at their Golden Summer Casino Happy Hour. According to the facility’s Facebook post, it was a trifecta of engaging entertainment, mouthwatering dishes, and gorgeous ambiance.

Elvis, Magic, and a Little Bit of Luck

Guests were treated to a live performance by none other than The King himself, Mr. Elvis Presley, and a show by magician extraordinaire Colin Culliver.

They tried their luck at roulette, poker, blackjack, and even an exclusive Uno table. And the highlight? Couples could swing by the Chapel of Love and renew their vows Vegas-style.

These Events Aren’t a One-Time Thing

As cool as this event was, it turns out it’s not unusual for residents to enjoy enrichment like this at North River Health Campus. I took a quick scroll through their Facebook page and saw all kinds of fun activities they've hosted.

They’ve done story gardening, family nights, Sunday brunches, animal encounters, theme parties, road trips, and even a hot air balloon ride. I mean, seriously. I kind of want to go live there now.

Why North River Health Campus Goes All Out

I caught up with Katelin McKinney, the Area Life Enrichment Director at North River Health Campus, to find out more about why she plans these events and how they impact the residents.

I see you do a lot of fun, themed activities with your residents. What inspired the idea to host a Vegas event?
Our company places a lot of value on ensuring that our residents continue to live an engaged and enriched lifestyle during their stay with us. Each summer they challenge us to put on the best event for our residents and communities and this was one of those events. I have the privilege of working alongside my husband Jeremy McKinney- Director of Culinary Services, and collaborating to create these over-the-top experiences.

What was the most memorable or emotional moment of the event for you?
Hands down the vow renewals. We had four couples each with a unique story, who wanted to renew their commitment to each other in front of friends and family and it was the most beautiful thing I’ve witnessed in my career. One resident had a bachelorette party the afternoon before with her granddaughters, another couple never had their wedding photos taken because they had eloped, another couple loved Elvis Presley and jumped at the chance to be married by “the King,” and the first couple to take part in the ceremony broke down in tears and there was not a dry eye in the place.

How did the residents react when they saw the setup and the entertainment?
They were absolutely blown away. It is now two weeks later, and we still have residents and family members talking about it. Our Elvis impersonator, Jonathan Gilbert, completely embodied the King of Rock and Roll, from the looks to the phrasing he uses, and of course the voice and our residents ate it up!

It was important to us that our residents felt as if they had truly been transported to a Vegas Casino, so planning began a couple of months ago. What would make this event an authentic experience? The food of course was a major player, we wanted to bring the idea of a Vegas buffet to life and did so with Raw Oysters, Shrimp Cocktail, Dessert Shooters, Watermelon Salad Botes, Cheesecakes, Sliders and so much more delivered by showgirls and Elvi Presley himself. We began decorating the day before to build excitement and intrigue around the event, culminating in the Elvis performance and Magic Show by Collin Culliver.

Why do you think events like this are important for senior living communities?
When you think of Senior Living, you’re probably thinking of Bingo, Chair Exercise, or frozen premade foods. You’re probably not thinking about walking down the aisle to a vow renewal with a showgirl, dancing on stage with Elvis and Priscilla, indulging in Oysters on the Half Shell, Tiramisu, Shrimp Cocktail or Macarons- on a Friday afternoon. Events like this breathe life into our residents and their families as well as the community. Life can still be lived and experiences still had- on your own terms.

Do you have plans to make this an annual tradition or do another big themed event soon?
We have held this event the past two years, and I hope it continues into next. In the meantime, we will celebrate our upcoming Las Vegas Themed Week in August. Themed Weeks are held quarterly with rotating themes. In the first two quarters of the year we held a Winter Wonderland Ball and Hollywood Gala Themed Weeks complete with activities, food and decorations to celebrate the themes.

What’s one thing you hope families and the community take away when they see these photos?
I hope they see the joy, life, and love these photos captured. It was a remarkable day, certainly one that we won’t soon forget.
