One of the Evansville Police Department's most community-focused initiatives is making its return for the summer.

EPD has announced that Walking Wednesdays will once again take place throughout the months of June and July, allowing residents to connect with officers outside of emergency situations and traffic stops.

A Program Built on Community Connection

Walking Wednesdays first launched during the summer of 2021 as a way for officers to safely interact with residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program was designed to get officers out from behind the wheel of their patrol vehicles and into neighborhoods where they could have casual conversations with community members. The initiative proved successful and has continued each summer since.

According to EPD, Walking Wednesdays are focused on building relationships, strengthening community partnerships, and creating positive interactions between officers and residents.

First Stop is Rochelle-Landers Pool

The first Walking Wednesday of the summer is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. in the area around Rochelle-Landers Pool.

Officers and department administrators will spend the afternoon walking through the neighborhood and handing out free popsicles from the Crime Prevention Unit trailer.

Residents are encouraged to stop by, ask questions, chat with officers, walk alongside them, or simply grab a popsicle and say hello.

More Neighborhood Visits Planned This Summer

Walking Wednesdays will continue every Wednesday throughout June and July from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at different locations across Evansville.

The department says the initiative is an opportunity to create meaningful conversations and strengthen the connection between law enforcement and the neighborhoods they serve.

Future locations are expected to be announced as the summer progresses.
