October is almost here, which means I am fully prepared to embrace all things spooky for the foreseeable future.

And if haunted houses aren't quite enough for you, how about exploring an enormous historic sanatorium after dark?

The Indiana State Sanatorium in Rockville has become a destination for paranormal investigators, photographers, and urban explorers, and visitors can actually get inside to experience it for themselves.

More Than 120,000 Square Feet of Indiana History

Located on more than 200 acres in Parke County, the Indiana State Sanatorium includes more than 120,000 square feet of historic buildings, along with thousands of feet of steam tunnels beneath the property.

Construction on the property began in the early 1900s, and the Indiana State Sanatorium operated as the state's primary tuberculosis hospital from 1908 until 1968.

The property later reopened as the Lee Alan Bryant Health Care Center in 1976, operating as a nursing home and private mental hospital before eventually closing.

Today, visitors can explore buildings throughout the sprawling property, including the former administration building, nursing home, power plant, and Superintendent's Mansion.

Explore the Sanatorium by Flashlight This October

If you're looking for something particularly appropriate for spooky season, the Sanatorium offers guided flashlight tours during October.

Guides take visitors through the buildings while sharing historical and paranormal information about the Indiana property. Flashlight tours are currently listed at $40 per person.

Those who would rather see everything in daylight can choose a self-guided Day Roam, currently priced at $25 per person.

And then there are the people who look at this place and think, "Yeah, I'd like to stay there ALL NIGHT."

You can do that, too.

You Can Spend the Night Inside the Indiana State Sanatorium

Private overnight paranormal investigations provide access to the buildings and property from 5 p.m. until 10 a.m. the following morning, with accommodations also available on site.

The Sanatorium stresses that the property is privately owned, so visitors need to book an appropriate tour or investigation before exploring. Don't turn your ghost hunt into a trespassing charge.

The Indiana State Sanatorium is located at 3838 E. Old 36 Road in Rockville, Indiana.

You can see tour options, learn more about its history, and plan your visit through the official Indiana State Sanatorium website.
