A baby powder manufacture has expanded a recall of its products after it was discovered to contain asbestos!

When it comes to caring for a new baby, there are enough things to be worried about. Asbestos in your baby powder should not be one of them.

What Is Asbestos and Why Is It Dangerous

Asbestos is the name given to naturally occurring minerals that are often used in building materials like insulation and fireproofing materials. According to the National Cancer Institute, asbestos fibers can be inhaled, getting trapped inside the lungs leading to breathing troubles, scarring of the lungs, and serious, long-term health issues.

Asbestos is Carcinogenic

Asbestos is a known carcinogen, and can cause a number of different types of cancers.

Exposure to asbestos causes most mesotheliomas (a relatively rare cancer of the thin membranes that line the chest and abdomen); it can also cause cancers of the lung, larynx, and ovary.

How Does Asbestos Get Into Baby Powder

In an announcement by Dynarex Corporation, points out that asbestos is often found naturally occurring near talc. They say that if talc is not mined carefully or purified properly, it can become contaminated with asbestos.

Initial Baby Powder Recall Issued September 2024

A recall was initially issued by Dynarex in September 2024 after a routine sampling found the company's DynaCare Baby Powder contained asbestos. At that time only 62 cases of product were included in the recall. The affected products included batch/lot number B051 and an expiration date of 2026/12/28 that can be found on the bottom of the bottles.

Recalled Baby Powder Was Sold in IL, IN, & KY + 33 Other States and Online

The products in the initial recall were sold in 12 states including Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee, as well as online via Amazon. The most recent recall has been expanded to a total of 35 states, including Indiana. The complete list of affected products can be found below.

Second Baby Powder Recall Impacts More Cases and Includes More States

The new recall includes 373 cases of 14 ounce bottles of DynaCare Baby Powder, and 647 cases of 4 ounce bottles of DynaCare Baby Powder. There are 24 fourteen-ounce bottles per case, and 48 four-ounce bottles per case.

Additional Products Found to Contain Asbestos

In addition to the baby powder, the company says in a release that they have found additional products that may contain asbestos.

Upon further investigation, we have identified additional lots of products that may contain asbestos due to using the same bulk talc material. The company has ceased the distribution of the product as an investigation is proceeding to determine what caused the contamination of the talc.

At this time, they say there have been no adverse events or illness reported as a result of the contaminated baby powder.
