What Are UFOs?

The term UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object, and is essentially an object you see in the sky, but can't make out what it is.

Britannica explains UFOs as:

Unidentified flying objects (UFOs) are airborne objects—or optical phenomena that seem like airborne objects—that an onlooker is unable to identify.
UFOs first became a major subject of public interest after World War II, possibly sparked by the development of rocket technology.
Some interpret the sighting of UFOs as evidence that extraterrestrial life exists and has visited Earth

The history of UFO sightings is actually quite fascinating, and Britannica notes the first widely publicised UFO sighting took place in 1947, so this isn't a new phenomenon.

The National UFO Reporting Center

Since 1974, the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) has been compiling data for UFO sightings nationwide. What makes this data especially interesting is anyone can hop on and see the data, and it can even be broken down by city. Which had me wondering, how many UFO sightings have been reported around Evansville?

Evansville, Indiana, Has More Than 80 UFO Reports On Record

When I broke down the data from NUFORC, Evansville has 87 reported UFO sightings, with the first one taking place in 1970. However, a majority of the UFO sightings have been reported over the past 30 years, with 81 UFO reports submitted since 1995.

Evansville's First UFO Report

The first reported UFO sighting in Evansville is from April 20th, 1970 in this report the person claimed to see a saucer-shaped object above a cornfield.

travelng north on rt 57,I noticed dust being kicked up in a farmers field,i looked up and noticed that at about 200 feet in the air a silvery disk shaped object was traveling parallel to the ground traveling at about the same speed as me and a friend.this object was approx 1/4 mile away and it was a sunny warm spring day,the object was very detailed and i could see what appeared to be windows on the top portion of the craft.i have never seen anything like this before and have never seen anything like it since,and was totally unmistakeable for anything other than a classic disk shaped ufo

I would also like to note that this took place on 4/20, so make of that what you will. It may mean nothing, but I just felt it may be worth pointing out.

Evansville's Most Recent UFO Sighting

When looking at the NUFORC database for Evansville, the most recent UFO report is from last year. On October 23, 2024, a report of "orbs" in the sky was made. The description for this UFO sighting was of 2 orbs in the sky.

2 completely silent orbs that had a reddish orange glow, were playing in the sky. We were waiting outside of work for it to open, and we were talking about space. At the exact time those 2 orbs, while moving very fast and quiet. Not sound to follow, and I know a satellite when I see one. I sadly didn’t get pics or videos because it happened so fast.
