There's a recent study of the most dangerous cities in the United States, and as it turns out there are three Indiana cities that made the list. Chances are they might not be what you'd expect.

When you think of Indiana overall, you don't really associate it with crime. Sure, criminal acts happen all of the time, but that's not typically the stereotype that goes with Indiana. I mean Indiana isn't even one of the top ten most dangerous states in the country. No matter what state you live in, there are always certain places that you want to avoid due to how dangerous some of the neighborhoods are, and Indiana is no exception.

Neighborhood Scout has a list of the 100 Most Dangerous Cities in America, and the numbers are grim. Using the latest FBI crime data and Census Bureau stats, this ranking calculates the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents in cities with populations of 25,000 or more. The study says that violent crimes—defined as murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault—are the driving factors behind the rankings.

Three Indiana Cities Among America’s Most Dangerous

According to Neighborhood Scout, three Indiana cities are among the top 50 most dangerous cities in the country. You may or may not be surprised by which ones they are. I'll be honest, I expected to see a few other Indiana cities on this list, but to my surprise, these are the three Indiana cities among the most dangerous in the nation:

Number 27: South Bend (chance of being a victim of a violent crime - 1 in 69)

Number 31: Terre Haute (chance of being a victim of a violent crime - 1 in 71)

Number 37: Elkhart (chance of being a victim of a violent crime - 1 in 77)

In any event, I wouldn't let these findings deter you from visiting some of these places. These cities have so much to offer folks in the area. Although, I would be cautious about entering some areas if they seem a little "off". There are still some pretty cool places to shop, visit, eat, and drink in all of these cities. If you want to find out more about this study and why each city made this list, you can do so by visiting the article here.
