Cereal may not be the most exciting breakfast, but it does come in clutch when you need something quick. If you want the best, here’s what most Americans are favoring these days.

I don't indulge in a bowl of cereal every day. Rather, it's one of those little things in life I’m always rediscovering. I might go four months without buying a box, and when I finally make my way back to that side of the store, I find myself tossing two or three different kinds into my cart. In fact, one of those popular choices happens to be the new No. 1 favorite in America.

Tracking Down America's Favorite Cereal Brand

March 7 is National Cereal Day, making now the perfect time to see which colorful boxes lead the pack in overall popularity. To do this, VegasInsider analyzed popular cereal brand keywords to determine which ones Americans prefer most. Their ranking was based on overall search volume over the past 12 months.

Before revealing our champion, let's take a look at some other popular favorites that didn't quite make it to the top of the list. In second place was Lucky Charms, which has been around since 1964. The actual cereal itself is quite flavorless, but the colorful marshmallows easily make up for it.

Lucky Charms was followed by Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, and Frosted Flakes. Overall, I don't think that's a bad top five. However, I was somewhat shocked to see a lack of chocolate-flavored cereals on the list. Cocoa Puffs, Cocoa Pebbles, and Reese's Puffs were nowhere to be found in the top 10. Weird.

America's Favorite Cereal Isn't All That Exciting

According to the data compiled by VegasInsider, America's favorite cereal brand is actually Cheerios. Not Honey Nut Cheerios or any of the other spinoffs—just plain old Cheerios. I suppose you can't go wrong with a classic. It's labeled as heart-healthy and doesn't leave you with a sugar rush when you're done eating.

It is worth noting, however, that Cheerios, like Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, is a General Mills product. This data would indicate that the company seems to be doing something right in terms of breakfast cereal, as all three of those round out the top three favorites nationwide.
