It's been a sad and tragic beginning in 2025 for the airline industry and it just became even more challenging for an airport in Illinois that will now be impacted by a mass layoff of more than 500 workers.

The newest WARN notice submitted to the state of Illinois will affect hundreds of workers at O'Hare Airport in Chicago. It comes from Air Wisconsin Airlines LLC at O'Hare Airport which will have two different types of layoffs. The notice says they will be laying off 221 permanently effective March 31, 2025. It unfortunately doesn't stop there. The Milwaukee Sentinel-Journal says that another 294 will be temporarily laid off as they are union workers who have that protection.

Why is Air Wisconsin laying off so many workers in Illinois?

The report says that a partnership between American Airlines and Air Wisconsin is ending and that they felt the layoffs were necessary "to provide financial flexibility". While the WARN notice says that 221 will be permanently laid off, other reports say it will affect 219 salaried and managerial employees.
