One-Room Schoolhouses

These days when it comes to schools typically one teacher will teach a class of a few dozen kids around the same age.  It didn't always work this way though.  Back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was not uncommon to see one-room schoolhouses.  In a one-room schoolhouse, there would be one teacher and she would teach students of all ages.

Here is what AmericasLibrary.Gov has to say about one-room schoolhouses and how they worked:

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most American students attended a one-room schoolhouse. A single teacher would typically have students in the first through eighth grades, and she taught them all. The number of students varied from six to 40 or more. The youngest children sat in the front, while the oldest students sat in the back. The teacher usually taught reading, writing, arithmetic, history, and geography. Students memorized and recited their lessons.

Can you imagine what it would be like to have to teach students of all ages?   It would definitely be a challenge! There are many historical one-room schoolhouses all across the U.S.  but one recently went on the market in Kentucky, so you can own a piece of history.

I could picture myself sitting on the front porch sipping on some sweet tea, and hosting a gathering with some friends in the main hall.   This would be such a cool piece of history to own.  I'd imagine someone who is much better at interior design than I am could turn the old schoolhouse into a quaint home with an open living area.  Or this building would make a beautiful small event space.

Here is what HG Hickey WRKentucky.com has to say about the schoolhouse and its unique history:

Established in 1919, the Jennings Hollow School provided education up to 7th grade for its students in the community until 1964. In 1990 the school house was featured in a movie called Borderline, several members of the community where offered small roles in the film to help with authenticity. Today, this newly restored historical one room schoolhouse is loaded with quaint charm. A large bank of windows light up the antiqued wood floors and walls making it impossible not to wonder back in time as you take in the one room Interior. With a large front porch and front yard you have everything you need for a Norman Rockwell style family gathering place or convert to a unique one room home. Complete with a new bathroom and heating and air.
