When my daughter was born, we were told she had a genetic condition that can cause developmental delays. We had no idea if she would always have to be in special needs classes and wouldn't know until she was old enough to complete a standardized test.

So, two years ago when she was about to turn three, I took her in to the Warrick Co. School Corp free early childhood testing to see where we were at. She was about to start pre-school classes at NUMPS and I wanted to prepare myself. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made because they completed several physical tests like vision and hearing, but also cogniftive tests. Some of the questions were above her cognitive level. I remember one was, "How did you get here?" How opened-ended is that one? They were looking for something like, "In a car," but in her baby mind she was thinking, "My mama's tummy, God willed it, and possibly in a yellow submarine. Oh look, a cookie! I'll just skip this one..."

But, I was also able to talk to her future guidance counselor about skills we need to work on and how to best help her prepare for school. She explained that I need to teach her to write her "O's from left to right and she needs help with direction-following skills. Ha... if only they knew! They even offered to set up free one-on-one sessions to help with that. I was also able to talk to her about her elementary school and best options for our family.

And, I'm happy to report, she's not only in "normal" range but tested "above average." That stinker had us worried!
