It’s a boy… It’s a girl… It’s a kitten! Kitten season has reared its deceivingly cute head, and litters are already coming through the doors at the Vanderburgh Humane Society. Over 50 kittens have already been surrendered. Some of these are with their mothers, others without. Some are weaned, others are still nursing. No matter the circumstances, the number of kittens entering the shelter only increases as the temperatures rise and it drains financial resources, staff & volunteer time, foster home space, and cage space. The current number of felines in our care is rapidly approaching 150.

On Saturday, June 6th, the VHS will throw our 2nd annual Kitten Shower. Designed like a human baby shower for expectant mothers, the event will feature refreshments & games; an opportunity to help staff come up with creative names for future litters; bottle-feeding demonstrations; and the chance to meet our newest and smallest shelter kittens before they go up for adoption. Families can bring the kids anytime to drop off donations, grab a treat, and snuggle some kittens!  Admission is free to the public, but guests who bring a bag of Purina Kitten Chow (available at big box stores) or an unopened bag of scoopable cat litter will be eligible to win prizes!

We hope to have media coverage of this adorable event, which lasts from 1:00-4:00 that Saturday afternoon. The VHS is located at 400 Millner Industrial Drive in Evansville, at the corner of West Morgan and Read St. just 2 blocks west of Garvin Park.
