Newsrooms around the country are mourning the loss of one of the greats today. Mike Wallace passed away overnight in Connecticut. Many attribute Wallace as a giant in the world of news.

In his 60 years in the world of news, Mike Wallace made an indelible mark. He was known as a “hard-hitting” reporter. He asked the tough questions and didn’t back down.

Wallace was the first person “60 Minutes” producer Don Hewitt hired when the program began in 1968. Wallace would go on to host the pilot news magazine program for 38 seasons, retiring in 2006.

Yet none can deliver the personality of Mike Wallace, or his talents as a newsman, quite like his friends. Morley Safer remembers his colleague and friend, the toughest newsman on earth.

His son, Chris Wallace, followed in his famous father’s footsteps, becoming a reporter as well, and earning his own reputation as a “hard hitting” interviewer. Chris Wallace now hosts Fox News Sunday on the Fox News Network.

The Associated Press published a lengthy and beautiful obituary to the legendary newsman.

Mike Wallace was 93. He is survived by his fourth wife, Mary Yates Wallace, and three children.
