As part of the statewide Operation Pull Over “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Traffic Safety Partnership has announced that it will be conducting sobriety checkpoints over the weekend.

Chief Deputy Dave Wedding says that law enforcement officers from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police will join forces to conduct these checkpoints - the first of two scheduled checkpoints starting Friday, August 24, 2012 from 11:30pm to 3:30am.

While authorities will not disclose the exact locations for the checkpoints, Wedding says the locations will take place in areas where recent data has indicated a disproportionately high number of reported hit and runs in Vanderburgh County.

Wedding says that hit and run crashes are often the result of impaired drivers who try to avoid arrest by fleeing the scene.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office in a combined effort with the Indiana State Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints through Labor Day.
