Utah Senator Proposes Pornography a Public Health Crisis

Last week, Todd Weiler, a Republican State Senator in Utah is warning Americans about pornography and the potential for addiction and escalating behaviors. He introduced a resolution that “recognizes the need for education, prevention, research, and policy change at the community and societal level in order to address the pornography epidemic that is harming the citizens of Utah and the nation.”

Though the resolution won't ban pornography or make it illegal, Weiler feels like it will help. According to Utah.gov, This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes that pornography is a public health hazard leading to a broad spectrum of individual and public health impacts and societal harms. This could lead the way to treatment facilities and longterm state-funded programs.

It's not just a kooky thing that some, you know, politician from Mormon Utah came up with," Weiler said. "When I was a kid, people might sneak a Playboy magazine and look at it. Now, you've got all kinds of horrible, graphic images that are available to anyone with an Internet connection one or two clicks away."

Doctors are starting to research the effect pornography has on both males' and females' brains and body chemistry, its long term use and escalating behaviors. There has also been research regarding pornography addiction leading to child pornography. Between 2005 and 2009, there was a 432% increase in child pornography.
