1961 — Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hit his 60th home run of the season to tie Babe Ruth's home run record in his 159th game. Ruth had completed the feat in 154 games in 1927. (More info.)

1981 — Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros pitched a major league record-fifth no-hitter of his career, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-0, at the Astrodome. (More info.)

1983 — Australia II, skippered by John Bertrand, beat Liberty, 4-3, helmed by Dennis Conner, to become the first foreign boat to take the America's Cup in 132 years. (More info.)

1988 — Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson left the Summer Olympics in Seoul after being stripped of his 100-meter gold medal because he tested positive for steroids. American Carl Lewis, who finished second, was awarded the victory. (More info.)
