Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on September 21:

1934 — Brothers Dizzy and Paul Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals each pitched shutouts in a doubleheader against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field, with Paul throwing a no-hitter, 3-0. (More info.)

1955 — Rocky Marciano knocked out Archie Moore in the ninth round of their fight at Yankee Stadium in New York to retain the heavyweight boxing title in his final pro fight. Marciano finished with a career record of 49-0. (More info.)

1964 — The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 1-0, when Chico Ruiz stole home at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. The defeat was the first of 10 straight losses, as the Phillies lost a six-and-a-half-game lead — and the National League pennant — to the St. Louis Cardinals. (More info.)

1969 — Steve O’Neal of the New York Jets boomed a record 98-yard punt against the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium. (More info.)

1970 — The Cleveland Browns defeated the New York Jets, 31-21, at Municipal Stadium in the first Monday Night Football game. (More info.)

1986 — The New York Jets beat the Miami Dolphins, 51-45, in overtime, as Ken O’Brien of the Jets and Dan Marino of the Dolphins combined for a record 884 passing yards. (More info.)

2008 —The New York Yankees played their final home game at Yankee Stadium, beating the Baltimore Orioles, 7-3. (More info.)
