Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on October 9:

1916 — Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox gave up a run in the first inning and then threw 13 scoreless frames in beating the Brooklyn Robins, 2-1, in Game 2 of the World Series at Braves Field in Boston. (More info.)

1934 — Joe Medwick of the Cardinals spiked third baseman Marv Owen of the Detroit Tigers, despite an 11-0 St. Louis lead in Game 7 of the World Series. The aggressive play caused fans at Detroit’s Navin Field to riot, and Medwick had to be removed to calm the crowd. (More info.)

1966 — The Baltimore Orioles completed a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers to win their first World Series. (More info.)

1997 — Dean Smith announced his retirement after 36 years — and a then-record 879 victories — as coach at the University of North Carolina. (More info.)

2000 — Center Brett Hull of the Dallas Stars scored his 611th goal to pass his father, Bobby, on the all-time NHL scoring list. (More info.)
