Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on October 27:

1926 — Lester Patrick, for whom the NHL’s Patrick Division and Patrick Trophy were later named, became the first coach and general manager of the New York Rangers. (More info.)

1962 — Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser became the first woman to break the one-minute mark in the 100-meter freestyle at the Empire Games in Melbourne. (More info.)

1986 — The New York Mets beat the Boston Red Sox, 8-5, in Game 7 of the World Series at Shea Stadium and won their first world championship since 1969. (More info.)

1991 — Jack Morris of the Minnesota Twins shut out the Atlanta Braves, 1-0 in 10 innings, in Game 7 of the World Series at the Metrodome, giving the Twins their second title in five seasons. (More info.)

2002 — Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys broke the NFL career rushing record held by Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears. (More info.)

2004 — The Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, at Busch Stadium completing a sweep and winning their first World Series since 1918. (More info.)

2008 — Game 5 of the World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays at Citizens Bank Park was suspended — the first such instance in history —with the score tied: 2-2. (More info.)

2011 — David Freese hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 11th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals — twice down to their last strike — forced a Game 7 by beating the Texas Rangers, 10-9, in Game 6 of the World Series. (More info.)
