Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on October 19:

1936 — The Associated Press released its first-ever poll to rank major college football teams, with Minnesota at the No. 1 position. (More info.)

1957 — Maurice (Rocket) Richard of the Montreal Canadiens, already the NHL’s all-time leading scorer, became the first player to notch 500 career goals. (More info.)

1968 – American Bill Toomey won the decathlon at the Summer Games in Mexico City with an Olympic record of 8,193 points. (More info.)

1981 — Rick Monday of the Dodgers hit a two-out, ninth inning home run, as Los Angeles beat the Montreal Expos, 2-1, in the deciding game of the National League Championship Series. (More info.)

1999 — Kenny Rogers of the Mets walked Andruw Jones of the Braves with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 6, and Atlanta beat New York, 10-9, at Turner Field to win the National League Championship Series and advance to the World Series. (More info.)

2004 — Curt Schilling of the Red Sox, playing with a sock allegedly bloodied by stitches from an ankle tendon injury, pitched Boston past the New York Yankees, 4-2, to even the American League Championship Series between the teams at three games apiece. (More info.)
