1903 — Bill Dinneen of the Boston Pilgrims shut out the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-0, in Game 8 to win the first World Series ever played, then in a best-of-nine-game format. (More info.)

1960 — Bill Mazeroski of the Pirates hit a game- and series-winning home run off Ralph Terry of the Yankees as Pittsburgh beat New York, 10-9, in Game 7 of the World Series at Forbes Field. (More info.)

1971 — The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 4-3, at Three Rivers Stadium in Game 4 of the World Series and the first ever played at night. (More info.)
