1890 — The first Army vs. Navy football game — won by the Midshipmen, 24-0 — was played at West Point, N.Y. (More info.)

1934 — Beginning a decades-long tradition, the Detroit Lions played at home on Thanksgiving Day, losing to the Chicago Bears, 19-16. It was the first NFL game broadcast to a national audience. (More info.)

1976 — The New York Yankees signed outfielder Reggie Jackson, who had played the previous season with the Baltimore Orioles, to a five-year $2.9 million contract. (More info.)

1980 — Georgia beat Georgia Tech, 38-20, as Herschel Walker set a national freshman rushing record of 1,616 yards in a season. (More info.)

1987 — Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers began a streak of an NFL-record 22 consecutive completed passes. (More info.)
