1956 — The United States beat Russia, 89-55, to win the gold medal at the Summer Olympics at Melbourne, Australia. (More info.)

1975 — Running back Archie Griffin of Ohio State became the first player to win a second Heisman Trophy as college football’s top player. (More info.)

1985 — The Miami Dolphins beat the previously undefeated Chicago Bears, 38-24, at the Orange Bowl. It would be the only loss the eventual Super Bowl-winning Bears would suffer that season. (More info.)

1991 — The New York Mets signed former Pittsburgh Pirates’ outfielder Bobby Bonilla to a five-year, $29 million contract making him the highest-paid athlete in team sports. (More info.)

1993 — The Houston Rockets beat the New York Knicks, 94-85, at Madison Square Garden for their NBA record-tying 15th straight victory to start the season. (More info.)
