1910 — Jack Coombs of the Philadelphia Athletics and Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox each pitched 16 scoreless innings as their teams played to a tie. (More info.)

1936 — Jesse Owens set an Olympic long-jump record at the Berlin Games, topping Lutz Long of Germany as German leader Adolf Hitler watched from his private box. (More info.)

1945 — Byron Nelson won a record 11th consecutive PGA tournament by claiming the Canadian Open at Thornhill Country Club in Toronto. (More info.)

1957 — Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina came from far back to win the German Grand Prix at Nurburgring and secure his record fifth Formula One title. (More info.)

1982 — Joel Youngblood of the New York Mets singled for his team in Chicago during a day game, was then traded to the Montreal Expos after the contest, and arrived in Philadelphia in time to get a hit for his new team in their game that night. (More info.)

1984 — American Carl Lewis won the gold medal in the 100-meters at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. (More info.)

1985 — Pitcher Tom Seaver of the Chicago White Sox won the 300th game of his career by beating the New York Yankees, 4-1, at Yankee Stadium in New York. (More info.)

1985 — Rod Carew of the California Angels recorded his 3,000th career base hit at Anaheim County Stadium in California. (More info.)
