1864 — The Travers Stakes, a race for 3-year-old horses, was run for the first time at the Saratoga Race Course in New York. (More info.)

1914 — Golfer Walter Hagen, 22, won the US Open at Midlothian Country Club in Blue Island, Illinois. (More info.)

1926 — Ted Lyons of the Chicago White Sox no-hit the Boston Red Sox, 6-0, in just 67 minutes at Fenway Park in Boston. (More info.)

1947 — The Maynard (PA) Midgets won the first National Little League Tournament, which would later be dubbed the Little League World Series, beating Lock Haven, PA., 16-7, in Williamsport, PA. (More info.)

1967 — Owner Charlie Finley of the Athletics released Ken Harrelson, who became Major League Baseball’s first true free agent. (More info.)

1982 — Rollie Fingers of the Milwaukee Brewers became the first relief pitcher in history to record 300 saves when he pitched the final two innings of a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners at the Kingdome. (More info.)

2004 — US swimmer Michael Phelps won his eighth medal of the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. (More info.)
