1904 — Jesse Tannehill of the Boston Americans no-hit the Chicago White Sox, 6-0. (More info.)

1920 — Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians died after being hit in the head by a pitch thrown by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. He remains the only major league player ever to be killed by a pitched ball. (More info.)

1933 — Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees played in his 1,308th straight game to break the major league record. (More info.)

1938 — Henry Armstrong won a split-decision over Lou Ambers in their fight at Madison Square Garden in New York, becoming the first boxer to hold titles in three different weight classes — lightweight, welterweight and featherweight — at the same time. (More info.)

1968 — Golfer JoAnn Carner won her fifth US Women’s Amateur title. (More info.)

1984 — Pete Rose returned to the Cincinnati Reds as player-manager and recorded two hits in a 6-4 win over the Chicago Cubs at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. (More info.)

1988 — American Butch Reynolds ran the 400 meters in 43.29 seconds at the International Grand Prix Sportfest in Zurich to break the 20-year-old world record held by Lee Evans. (More info.)

1992 — Kevin Gross of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitched the only no-hitter of the MLB season, a 2-0 win over the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. (More info.)
