Local Comedian, Ben Cecil and Mentor Kids Executive Director Berly Tillman Sullivan show off  their Core strength and team work abilities while doing the Plank! We had a lot of fun in this exercise segment, and all kidding aside, the Plank will help strengthen your Core and the upper and lower body. The Plank will also increase your flexibility and improve your posture.

Planks are also great for improving our moods! If you sit at your desk most of the day or stay in one position, most likely your body will rebel. Your muscles will tighten up and you will notice stiffness in your body. This muscle tightness and stiffness causes us to be irritable and a little cranky! Doing the Plank will help lengthen the spine and improve our mood!

Ben & Berly demonstrated the Partner Plank that anyone could do together. Kids love a good challenge, so why not challenge them in a plank. See how long the kids can hold the Plank before breaking good form and posture. You want to make sure that the core is engaged (SCOOP) and that your back does not sway. Also, keep your bottom down, not up. Your body should draw a straight line from the top of your head to the soles of your feet.

You can do the plank in many positions, choose the one that is best for you. Here are a few options for you: Forearm Plank, Push Up Plank, Side Plank. Listen to your body and modify if needed: Knees down on floor, side plank one knee down on floor. Start out holding the plank for 30 seconds and then increase your time up to 2 minutes!

Have Fun!
