With the summer movie season in full swing, it's about time we got a poster for what's sure to be one of the big events of 2013. The first poster for 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' has arrived, and it's sure to send a chill or two down the spines of Middle Earth fans the world over.

Delivered to us straight from director Peter Jackson, via his Facebook page, the poster is only a teaser, but it's a dramatic and stylish one that reminds us that nothing does "epic" quite like these movies. As you can see below, the poster features a lone Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) standing at the ruins of the Lonely Mountain ... but he's not alone. Through that door lies the terrifying dragon Smaug, who will undoubtedly be one of the coolest (and deadliest) threats in this entire trilogy. We don't see enough of Smaug to make any snap judgments, so all we can say at the moment is that he looks like ... well, he looks like a dragon and there's nothing wrong with that.

Although many fans and critics thought that 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' was a little bloated, we hope that the second outing will prove more impressive. After all, now that the setup is out of the way, we can move straight into the plundering and dragon fighting. Consider our fingers crossed and hopes raised for this one!

'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' will arrive in theaters on December 13, 2013.
