‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2′ Gets a Rewrite … and Maybe a New Director

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

We’ve got even more David Fincher news for you today — ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ sequel, ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire,’ is getting a rewrite from Fincher’s ‘Seven’ scribe Andrew Kevin Walker, but it looks like Fincher might be too busy to helm the sequel thanks to ‘Gone Girl.’

We previously reported news that Rosamund Pike is the frontrunner to lead Fincher’s adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel ‘Gone Girl,’ but it looks like that movie might be keeping Fincher too busy to sit in the director’s chair for ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire,’ the planned sequel to Fincher’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.’ The Playlist reports that Sony is still moving ahead with the sequel, but Fincher’s responsibilities on ‘Gone Girl’ might not allow him to return to direct.

Andrew Kevin Walker, who previously penned ‘Seven’ for Fincher, is currently rewriting ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire,’ which Sony would need to begin shooting next year. But Fincher’s schedule isn’t the only one in question — ‘Dragon Tattoo’ star Daniel Craig is headlining the Broadway play ‘Betrayal’ with wife Rachel Weisz this fall, and next fall he’ll be busy working on the next James Bond movie, leaving only a small window of availability for the actor. Worst case scenario: ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire’ doesn’t start shooting until 2015, leaving a huge gap between the first film and the sequel, but allowing the possibility for Fincher to return to the helm.

Also noted: Fincher’s ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea‘ appears to have been dead at Disney for months, so at least we know that film is off the table.
