The CW Wants Another Modern Classic From Reese Witherspoon’s ‘Great Expectations’
At this point, we’re starting to understand that all one needs to do to sell a pilot these days is to pick any work of classic literature, chop words off the title, and set it in the modern day. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ becomes ‘Wunderland,’ even Green Arrow comics become ‘Arrow,’ so what’s the latest hack n’ slash adaptation coming to The CW? Why, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’ of course, courtesy of Reese Witherspoon! Guess which word they chop off!
The CW has done it again, developing yet another classic story into a modern-day adaptation with a twist. Classic novel ‘Great Expectations’ is the latest eyed for the treatment, turning famed literary upstart Pip into a girl for ‘Expectations.’ The Hollywood Reporter claims that not only has The CW given script orders to the series, but film star Reese Witherspoon will executive produce through production company Pacific Standard.
‘Expectations’ will re-imagine the 1860s London tale to see its Pip character as a “small-town girl with big dreams of making it in the city” of San Francisco, quickly finding herself disillusioned by reality until an anonymous benefactor changes her fortunes. We’ll bet you right now “Estella” gets changed to “Stellan,” and he will be brooding, oh yes, he will be brooding.
“Expectations” comes with a number of other adapted/updated projects for the network, including the current season’s ‘Arrow’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ as well as in-development projects like ‘Wunderland,’ ‘Amazon‘ and ‘Sleepy Hollow.’ Witherspoon herself also has ‘Wendy & Peter’ in development at FOX, though of no real relation to Peter Pan.
What say you? could ‘Great Expectations’ prove effective as a modern gender-swapped drama? What will The CW pick up next?
