The CW’s ‘Amazon’: Wonder Woman TV Series Pushed to 2014?

Once it became apparent that The CW’s ‘Arrow‘ would prove a big success for the network, DC comics fans were excited to hear that The CW might look to capitalize on the good will by developing a unique Wonder Woman TV series titled ‘Amazon,’ focusing on the younger days of titular hero Princess Diana. The CW brass seemed optimistic that the project would move forward, but now the drama has been left off the network’s list of pilot pick-ups for the season. Is ‘Amazon’ dead in the water?
Wonder Woman has had a difficult TV history in the last few year, so it should come as no surprise that The CW’s upcoming prequel TV series ‘Amazon’ would be approached with some caution. To that end, The CW has apparently decided not to move forward with a pilot order for the series, but rather keep it in development until either the 2013 / 2014 season, mid-season or even 2015..
Speaking at the earlier TCA press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz updated reporters about âAmazon,â saying, âFirst off, weâre waiting to see the script. Second off, weâre busy casting for Diana as we speak. Hopefully the script works the way we wantâ¦. If we get the right script and the right casting, weâll go right forward to pilot.â We’d even heard a casting rumor or two, but it seems The CW didn’t want to rush such a potentially lucrative prospect.
The original casting sheet for The CWâs âAmazonâ:
She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. Sheâs delighted Âand just as often horrified  by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. Itâs all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling Âto her.
Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And sheâs completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly whatâs on her mind at all times. Sheâs bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when youâre lying to her. And she doesnât have time or patience for politics or tact because sheâs too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer.
There are too many sights to see Âand things to learn Âand people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic Âand she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.
The initial pilot script was written by Allan Heinberg (âGreyâs Anatomy,â âThe O.C.â), who also dabbled in writing the âYoung Avengersâ comics.
What say you? Are you disappointed ‘Amazon’ won’t make it to series this year, or would you rather The CW take its time to make sure it gets things right? Tell us what you want from a Wonder Woman TV series in the comments!
