Crime really does affect everyone. Just ask Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer — he was recently robbed at machete-point while at his vacation home in the West Indies.

A Supreme Court spokeswoman said Breyer, his wife Joanna and several guests were confronted by the thief around 9 p.m. Thursday in the pad Breyer owns on the Caribbean island of Nevis. No one was hurt, but the intruder did make off with about $1,000 in cash. The incident was reported to the local authorities, but it’s not known if any arrests were made.

The 73-year-old Breyer was nominated to the high court by President Bill Clinton in 1994. Prior to that, he was an assistant professor, professor of law, and lecturer at Harvard Law School, a professor at the Kennedy School of Government, and a judge on the First US Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.

He’s not the only Supreme Court justice to be a victim of crime — in 2004, Justice David Souter suffered minor injuries after being assaulted while jogging, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had her purse snatched during an outing with her family in Washington in 1996.

The justices end a month-long recess on Friday. Their next public meeting will be Feb. 21.
