‘Spy Hunter’ Movie Barrels Forward with ‘Gangster Squad’s Ruben Fleischer

Spy Hunter 2
Bally/Midway

The long-in-development film adaptation of ‘Spy Hunter’ just got new life at Warner Brothers, as they’ve just hired a new writer, and put director Ruben Fleischer in the driver’s seat.

This news comes from Deadline Hollywood, who say the writer is Carter Blanchard. Blanchard is a relative newcomer, though one of his spec script is currently going into production. This project has been in the works for a very long time as an adaptation of the famous video game ‘Spy Hunter’ has been kicking around Hollywood for over a decade now, with filmmakers like John Woo and Paul W.S. Anderson once attached, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was at one point supposed to be the driver.

And this is a lifeline for director Ruben Fleischer as he’s coming off of two misfires. Fleischer got a lot of attention for his film ‘Zombieland‘ (which is currently being turned into a TV show), but his follow up ’30 Minutes or Less’ didn’t do all that well, and his most recent film ‘Gangster Squad‘ died at the box office. Part of its death could have been poor timing. The film was bumped out of its September release date and moved to January because it needed reshoots. Originally it featured a massacre in a movie theater, and that was excised due to the Aurora shooting spree.
