We're finally beginning to experience some warmer weather after winter's deep freeze. It is a welcome change for many, but warmer weather will also bring its list of challenges and chores. Trees will need trimming, yards will need tending and even air conditioners will be tested before long. Fortunately, there are many service providers in our area willing to help, but your BBB reminds you to do your research before you hire.

1. Gain information about your need before seeking a professional – Learning a little about your plants, home or automobile concerns before seeking a professional can help you to bring the most pertinent information to light, which can save you time and money. It can also help you determine the best professional for your job and learn how to execute proper maintenance year round.

2. Keep good records – Consider purchasing a binder to hold all your warranties or copies of past service calls. Part numbers used, serial numbers and model numbers can be very helpful with future repairs, as well as manufacturer details. You may also wish to keep notes, along with your receipts, for any specific instructions or helpful service tips that are provided by professionals.

3. Obtain multiple quotes, as early as possible – Although it’s not likely our area is seeing high demand for air conditioner repairs just yet, the situation may be much different, very soon. The weather is unpredictable, but obtaining quotes for seasonal work early, is always smart. Contacting providers early in the season can provide flexibility in scheduling, more time allotted for the work and even possible discounts in pricing, before the increase in demand.

4. Don’t assume a business from the past holds the same service record or employees now – Businesses change hands, employees move and changes happen within the marketplace. If you were happy with the repairs provided by a business before, ask if their policies, pricing, warranties, or other service provisions are the same, as well as the ownership of the business. Confirm licensure, insurance and bonding, and request the details of the job in a written contract before making a commitment.

5. Check out a BBB Business Review – BBB Business Reviews are free of charge and provide a current record for any recent complaints or industry concerns known to the BBB. They also contain BBB ratings, accreditation status, contact information, years in service and other information that can be helpful in making a wise decision. Visit bbb.org/evansville for local business reviews or call 812-473-0202 to speak with a BBB representative.
