Southern Indiana is Getting a New Area Code
It was announced today by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission that Southern Indiana will be incorporating new area code 930 into new phone subscribers due to the shortage of 812 numbers.
This change is considered an "overlay" which means only new subscribers will receive the new area code but we will all have to use the 10-digit number because there will be two area codes in the same area.
The commission plans on giving users a 13-month grace period which will allow callers to prepare for the changes. Using the 10-digit number will be optional at first and then become mandatory.
The 930 and 812 area codes together are only projected to last 71 years. At that time another solution will be discussed. The 812 area code has been the only area code for Southern Indiana for about 66 years.
