If You Can’t Sleep, You May Want to Blame Your Cell Phone
While the technological advancements of the Smartphone might be helping you keep your busy life somewhat organized, new research suggests that it might actually be putting it in disarray by causing you to lose sleep.
According to Dr. Dan Naim of the Los Angeles Sleep Study Institute, people who use electronic gadgets to rock them to sleep at night are more likely to have their sleep, stress levels and mental health negatively affected than those who do not.
Dr. Naim says that the reason is due to the screens on things like cell phones and computers being so bright that they prevent the body from producing the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, which is commonly produced in darkness.
“While most of us need to use cellphones and computers, it’s best to keep these distractions to a minimum at night, when we’re supposed to wind down and prepare for sleep,” he said. “Keeping a cellphone by your bed at night may not be the best way to ensure a good night’s rest and could lower your productivity the next day.”
A recent National Sleep Foundation poll found that nearly two-thirds of the American population claims that they do not get enough sleep.
