I think this is a weird, but very cool story about an old WWI ship that rests in the woods of Kentucky near the state line with Ohio. Yes, weird.

During World War I, a ship known as the USS Sachem was commissioned for duty.  It had previously been known as "The Celt" and was built as a luxury cruise ship, but the US military needed steel hull ships of this size, so they purchased the vessel from the wealthy owner and renamed it the "USS Sachem."

The ship was given to genius Thomas Edison for experimentation in underwater communications.  After that, the "USS Sachem" was used a patrol boat in the Florida Keys. Post WWI, the ship was given back to the original owner in New York, who turned around and sold it. It was sold again to be used as a low-cost depression area fishing and party boat.

On the Google Earth map you can actually see part of the ship protruding from the woods.

Fast forward to 1984, when the "Sachem" was dismantled, removing the remaining military hardware and was then outfitted with outboard propulsion. The vessel left New York on the Hudson River, through Chicago to the Mississippi River and finally the Ohio where it's 183 foot long frame wedged into Taylor Creek creek outside Petersburg, KY.

Take a look at some of these photos of the ship, and the You Tube videos.  It's unclear why the ship took this route and got wedged in the woods, but it still sits there today. Creepy...  Here's a more detailed story of the "USS Sachem" and its life in the military and beyond.  The Youtube video below also gives you a close up view of this rotting vessel.  Also, below are three more videos that further detail the "Sachem" up close and personal.
