Last week in my report Are You Buying Ammonia Treated Meat Here In Evansville, I asked some Tri-State grocers whether or not the ground beef products sold in their stores contained Lean Finely Textured Beef Trimmings, aka Pink Slime.

Schnucks Markets was quick to respond saying “Schnucks does not add Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB) to our ground meat…Other ground meats from a number of reputable suppliers may include LFTB as part of the USDA-approved beef production process – one that has been in place for more than 20 years. LFTB is not a filler, nor is it something that is added to the beef. It comes from the same wholesome beef cuts used in the grind.”

Since then Schnucks Markets has announced that going forward the company will require suppliers to provide fresh ground beef products that are free of lean finely textured beef (LFTB) trimmings.

Although the use of LFTB in the production of ground beef is a USDA-Approved process, Schnucks Vice President of Meat and Seafood Ed Meyer says this decision comes on the heels of recent customer concerns about LFTB. “Some of our customers have indicated a preference for ground beef that is LFTB-free. We are listening to our customers and now working with our suppliers to make the transition,” Meyer said.

In the meantime, Meyer reminds customers that the following products, available in Schnucks stores now, do not contain lean finely textured beef trimmings.

  • Meat Master Ground Sirloin (Ground Sirloin or Ground Sirloin Patties)
  • Schnucks Never Ever Ground Round (Natural Ground Round or Natural Ground Round Patties)
  • Rain Crow Ranch 100% Certified Grass Fed (90% lean, 10% fat)- 16-oz. package.

Meyer says, “Delivering top quality products to our customers is always our aim.  Our food experts will always work to ensure that every product sold at Schnucks is wholesome quality product and produced in ways that meet or exceed industry standards.”
