According to the company that makes VCRs, they will make their final one this month!

A Japanese company that claims they are the world's last manufacturer of VCRs announced that they will cease production of VCRs at the end of the month!

In a story on CNN.com, the company blamed the lack of parts for the end of production.

"Last year, Funai sold 750,000 units, and found it was getting harder to find the parts to make VCRs."

The VCR dates back to the 1950's and according to Wikipedia the 1st cost around $50,000!

"The history of the videocassette recorder follows the history of videotape recording in general. Ampex introduced the Quadruplex videotape professional broadcast standard format with its Ampex VRX-1000 in 1956. It became the world's first commercially successful videotape recorder using two-inch (5.1 cm) wide tape.[1] Due to its high price of US$50,000, the Ampex VRX-1000 could be afforded only by the television networks and the largest individual stations."

Now would be the time to transfer all those old home movies from VCR to DVD!
