Recipe: Homemade Maull’s Sauce

I’m so happy that grilling season is here! On weekends (and even many weekdays) my backyard will be a smokey paradise of bbq goodness.

Here’s a recipe for a St. Louis style barbecue sauce that’s very similar to Maull’s barbecue sauce.

1 1/2 cups tomato purée
1/3 cup distilled white vinegar
3 tablespoons dark corn syrup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tablespoons molasses
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon thawed orange juice concentrate
2 teaspoons A1 steak sauc
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce or other hot sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Combine all the ingredients in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and stir often. Reduce the heat to medium and let the sauce simmer until it’s thick (about 10 min.).

Keep this sauce stored in the refrigerator.
