It’s pretty common knowledge that pregnant women should not consume alcohol, due to the potential negative effects it could have on the fetus and its development.

However, that’s not stopping one in 13 pregnant women from drinking alcoholic beverages while with child.

In fact, some even engage in drinking binges while in their delicate conditions. That’s a pretty terrifying thought.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have warned that drinking can damage the development of the fetal brain.

The organization conducted national telephone surveys of 14,000 pregnant women from 2006 through 2010. They were asked if they drank alcoholic beverages the previous month and if so, how much they had consumed.

Of those who admitted to drinking, nearly one in five said they went on a binge at least once, ingesting four or more drinks.

Women in the 35-44 age bracket were also the ones who drank the most.

There is a positive spin regarding these alarming stats. Binge drinking by pregnant women is down slightly from a similar study conducted in the early 2000s.
