Earlier today, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said that 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts was the masked gunman responsible for killing two people yesterday afternoon at the Clackamas Town Center Mall in Portland, Oregon.

Authorities say Roberts was with armed with a stolen AR-15 semi-automatic weapon and was not wearing a bullet proof vest as originally reported. Sheriff Craig Roberts said that the man was bound and determined to kill “as many people as possible.”

"At this time we do not understand the motive of this attack except to say no apparent relationship between suspect and victims," said the sherriff in a press conference. Roberts was wearing a white hockey mask and black clothing when he entered through the Macy’s  and opened fire in the food court and other public areas, according to witnesses.

"We have been able to identify the shooter over this last night," said sheriff Roberts. "I believe, at least from the information that's been provided to me at this point in time, it really was a killing of total strangers. To my knowledge at this point in time he was really trying, I think, to kill as many people as possible."

The shooter fatal wounded Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, and Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45. A third victim, Kristina Shevchenko, 15, was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

Police say the gunman apparently shot himself on the first floor of the mall near an REI store. Sheriff Craig Roberts says that the fast response on behalf of mall employees to lockdown stores prevented more people from being shot and killed.
