There's 'Arrested Development,' and there's just plain arrested. Next up on Netflix's roster of original releases is that of 'Weeds' creator Jenji Kohan's 'Orange is the New Black,' and its July 11 release date has finally allowed for a trailer release. Will the streaming service's first original dramedy achieve the reverence of 'House of Cards' or wind up more 'Hemlock Grove'-y?

The new Netflix series stars ‘Mercy’ vet Taylor Schilling as Piper, an engaged Brooklyn dweller whose past relationship with a drug runner in college leads her to a multi-year detention in a federal penitentiary. Piper quickly immerses herself in women’s prison culture, and finds acceptance and love among an outspoken group of inmates. ‘That ’70s Show’ alum Laura Prepon takes the role of Piper’s former drug runner, while Jason Biggs portrays her fiancé across the 13-episode series. 'Orange is the New Black' also stars Natasha Lyonne ('American Reunion') and Kate Mulgrew ('Star Trek: Voyager').

“With ‘Orange is the New Black,’ Jenji Kohan has created a dramatic, yet deeply funny world populated with unforgettable characters and no-holds-barred humor set against the backdrop of a women’s prison,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos of the adaptation of Piper Kerman’s best-selling memoir. “Jenji is one of the most fearless voices in television, and we are proud to share her uncompromising vision with Netflix members.”

Where previously we weren't sure what to make of 'Orange is the New Black,' the first trailer certainly piques our interest, and we feel the series will prove to be more than just a basic comedy.

Anyway, check out the first (NSFW) trailer for 'Orange is the New Black' (above), and tell us if you'll watch the new series starting July 11!
