Despite repeated warnings from the international community, North Korea launched a long range missile this evening. However, the rocket failed.

A senior U.S. official confirmed the missile broke up in mid-flight and did not reach the atmosphere to achieve orbit. Japan and South Korea have also confirmed the failure of the rocket.

North Korea had previously announced it would launch an observational satellite to commemorate the centennial birthday of Kim Il Sung, the recently deceased leader of the country. It is a key public holiday in the North Korean culture.

Japan planned to shot the rocket down if it had reached orbit.

The United Nations Security Council will meet tomorrow in and emergency session to discuss sanctions and a response to North Korea's actions.
