We figured that NBC was blowing a bit of smoke in touting both Will Ferrell and the ‘Anchorman‘ name for its new astronaut comedy pilot ‘Mission Control,’ but its first major casting is pure crystal. ‘Breaking Bad‘ and ‘Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23‘ star Krysten Ritter will blast off into the leading lady role, but will ‘Mission Control’ fall apart on the landing pad?

Set amid the backdrop of the 1962 space race, ‘Mission Control’ sees Ferrell and creative partner Adam McKay executive producing NBC’s new pilot project, written by ‘Always Sunny‘ vet David Hornsby and described as “A workplace ensemble in the tone of Anchorman that examines what happens when a strong woman butts heads with a macho astronaut in the race to land on the moon.”

According to the latest reports, Ritter will play said strong woman as Mary, tough girl and head engineer leading the Apollo team at Mission Control at the NASA Manned Space Center. The character has been described as a woman in a man’s world who is super-smart, brisk without being brusque and immensely capable without losing her feminine appeal. The as-yet-uncast Tom Stone is brought in to add balance to Mission Control, something Mary sees as a sexist attempt to undercut everything she has done.

Ritter will also produce the comedy, whose cast thus far includes Malcolm Barrett and Jonathan Slavin. This isn’t the first collaboration between Ferrell, Ritter and NBC either, who previously attempted to get ‘Assistance‘ off the ground with Ritter in the central role.

Well, what do you think? Are you on board for Krysten Ritter’s latest sitcom attempt ‘Mission Control,’ ‘Anchorman’ pedigree and all?
