Mission Evansville is a brand new initiative to connect high school youth to real needs in the local Evansville community. - Katie GoebelMission Evansville takes place Sunday, June 12 – Wednesday, June 15. 50+ teenage and adult volunteers stay overnight  at Mater Dei High School and spend their days serving with these local agencies: Boys & Girls Club, Dream Center, Ozanam Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, All Saints’ Clothes Closet & Soup Kitchen, Parks Department & Seton Harvest.

In planning Mission Evansville, five local Catholic youth ministers desired to create an experience for their young people that would open their eyes to real needs in their own communities. By Wednesday afternoon, participants will have completed over 600 volunteer hours.

On Monday, one crew of eight people set up 84 brand new mattresses at Ozanam Shelter. The crew at the Dream Center categorized and processed 150 donated books and taught middle school students how to play soccer. At the Boys & Girls Club, the crew spent time playing with and serving 5-8 year olds. At the local co-op Seton Harvest, the crew planted peppers and sweet potatoes and weeded through the eggplant. Mission Evansville crews will cover 7 different locations in their work this week.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who is well-known for her service of the poor, said: “The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace.” If you would like more information, contact Katie Goebel, Director of Youth Ministries for Corpus Christi, St. Philip, St. Matthew at 812-455-6779 or kgoebel@evdio.org.
