LOOGOOTEE, Ind. (AP) — Officials say seven businesses were destroyed or damaged in a fire that swept through a southern Indiana community's downtown square. Around 100 firefighters worked yesterday to extinguish the blaze that started in a T-shirt shop in the Martin County city of Loogootee (luh-GOH'-tee). Mayor Noel Harty says he's thankful no one was hurt in the fire.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Wildlife officials say Indiana deer hunters may see fewer deer than in previous years when the firearms season begins Saturday. The Department of Natural Resources is in the third year of an effort to reduce deer numbers in targeted areas. DNR deer biologist Chad Stewart says the resulting population is more in line with what should be seen in Indiana.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will visit Purdue University next week to deliver a speech and tour the Purdue Research Park. Vilsack will arrive in West Lafayette Monday and speak about agricultural issues at the Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Vilsack will also meet with 2009 World Food Prize laureate Gebisa Ejeta.
